Philadelphia Zoo, Trail of the Lorax

We designed a children’s play structure, in collaboration with Zoo staff, as part of their celebration of the Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax. An element of their “Year of the Orangutan,” this temporary exhibit immersed children and their families in the Seussian world of the Lorax, who cares deeply about his friends in the natural world. There are important connections between the threats facing orangutans through habitat loss, and the fantasy world of Dr. Seuss. Our play environment delivered an experience of rich, whole-body play, with the message that everyone can take positive steps to preserve habitats for all creatures.

The structure opened in March 2012.

“The creative thinking and design expertise of Metcalfe Architecture & Design allowed us to turn an underutilized, low energy space into a high energy and very fun kids’ exhibit among the trees.”
